We are currently seeking venues to host our Nevada Touring Initiative (NTI) Exhibitions for 2024. The NTI Traveling Exhibition Program delivers high-quality visual arts exhibits to communities throughout the state for an affordable fee. The cost includes rental of the artwork, installation and pick-up, insurance, and publicity and educational materials. We are currently seeking venues to host Meaning is always here – the exhibit features 14 two-dimensional artworks curated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas’ Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art’s permanent collection.
Staff can guide both new and experienced sponsors through the steps necessary to present rewarding community arts events by providing information and technical assistance in such areas as planning, publicity, and audience development. Arts and culture beautifies cities and towns, brings joy to
residents, as well as celebrates and preserves diverse
cultural expressions and traditions—improving emotional
health and well-being.
When people attend a cultural event, they often make an outing of it—dining at a restaurant, paying for parking or public transportation, enjoying dessert after the show, and returning home to pay for child or pet care. Attendees at the State of Nevada’s nonprofit arts and culture events spend $44.58 per person per event, beyond the cost of admission—vital income for local merchants and a value-add that few industries can compete with. Arts and culture organizations also strengthen the visitor economy: 9.5% of Nevada’s arts attendees travel from outside the State of Nevada; these cultural tourists spend an average of $100.20 per person. When asked, 50.8% of those nonlocal attendees reported that the primary purpose of their visit was “specifically to attend the performance, event, exhibit, venue, or facility” where they were surveyed.

"I started the curation of Meaning is Always Here by trying to imagine a persona the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art might present to Nevadans that live far away and cannot reach us. We at the Museum think we have a good sense of who we are, but how do others perceive us? We shift. Our exhibitions change. Therefore, this exhibition should show that change with artists from different backgrounds and media. The works should reference the real world and represent a transformation through the artists’ decisions, so that we can see where they’re coming from."

Miya Hannan, one of our 2023 Visual Arts Fellows, exhibition Uncertain Certainty was a combination of sculptural art and smoke painting. This exhibition was a fascinating representation of death, honoring death, history, and tradition, and contemplation on changing of form. Did you know you can draw with smoke? (pt. 1)
In February 2023, we had the opportunity to attend the Nevada Wild Art Exhibit presented by Northeastern Nevada Artists and Friends at the California Trail Interpretive Center. Here we were opened to a unique medium by Lynne Kistler. Kistler demonstrated her Surrealist Smoke Painting to a large group at the Center by placing a candle below a sheet of paper as demonstrated in the first photograph. We were blown away by her ability to screate figures with the smoke!
About Lynne Kistler:
Lynne Kistler is a 5th generation Nevadan, born and raised in Reno, Nevada. She attended Reno schools and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a BA and later earned a Master’s Degree in Art Education. She taught high school art for 30 years in Reno. Upon moving to Elko, Lynne became an Art Instructor at Great Basin College. An artist in almost all media, Lynne teaches students of all ages in the Elko area. Her work is exhibited around the state and in Elko and her exhibits can be seen in California, Utah, and Arizona. As a muralist, Lynne has created art for the University of Nevada, two churches, an athletic center, a private home, and the California Trail Interpretive Center. Currently, she is doing smoke drawing, a unique technique using a candle to put some on paper then bring out the images in pencil and eraser. Painting Nevada landscape is Lynne’s favorite pastime, as she dearly loves the beauty and uniqueness of the Nevada vision.

The Nevada Arts Council is committed to elevating the cultural landscape of Nevada by introducing strategic organizational assessments, designed to support the specific needs of cultural organizations. The strategic assessments will be available in five areas: (1) organizational, (2) programming, (3) venue, (4) community in focus, (5) cultural training.
We are seeking qualified individuals to serve on our Strategic Planning Assessment Task Force. The ideal candidate for the task force will have expert knowledge in at least one of the five program areas detailed above. A candidate does not have to have expert knowledge in all the areas. Nevada’s first Arts License Plate is available at DMV field offices statewide. The plate, designated by DMV as the “Children in the Arts” license plate, is available in a standard or personalized format. If you are interested in a standard format, the initial cost will be $51 dollars with an annual renewal fee of $20 in addition to all other registration fees.
